Only half of home-services calls reach a person.
Invoca's 2026 benchmarks found that just 52% of callers to home-services businesses speak with someone. What the other half costs, and how to close the gap.
A home-services phone rings at the worst possible moments: when the owner is on a roof, under a sink, or driving between two jobs. Nobody picks up, and the caller decides what happens next. Most of the time, that means calling the next company on the list.
That is not a hunch. It shows up in Invoca's call data.
What the numbers say
Invoca tracks phone conversations for marketing teams. Its 2026 benchmarks report is built on more than 70 million calls across ten industries, and for home services the finding is blunt: only about half of the people who call get to talk to someone. The other half never gets a person on the line.
The same report found that 55% of home-services businesses don't ask leads to buy or book the job, even when someone does answer. So the loss happens twice: once when the call goes unanswered, and again when an answered call ends without an appointment on the calendar.
For a trade business, that is the most expensive kind of lead to lose. Someone who picks up the phone usually has a problem right now: no heat, no hot water, a leak in the ceiling.
Small shops feel it most
The gap is not spread evenly. ServiceTitan compared booking rates across more than 3,000 trade businesses that use its software and found a steep difference by company size.
After 6 p.m. the difference grows. Small shops booked 9% of their evening calls; larger companies, which can afford a dispatcher or an after-hours line, booked 21%.
That matches how a small shop really works. When there are two trucks and no office, the person who could answer the phone is the same person doing the job.
Where the calls get lost
Most missed calls in home services fall into four moments:
- On the job. Hands inside a wall, phone in the truck.
- After hours. Evenings and weekends, when an owner-operator is finally off the clock.
- Busy stretches. One person on the phone means the second caller hears voicemail.
- Hold and phone trees. A caller with a burst pipe will not wait through a menu.
What an unanswered call costs you
We will not guess your numbers, but the arithmetic is simple:
missed calls per month × the share you would close × what a job is worth.
Say you miss 40 calls a month, you would win one in four, and a typical job is worth $350. That is 10 jobs, or $3,500 a month, going to a competitor. Change any of the three numbers and the result changes with it. Run it with your own numbers and compare the result with the plans.
Four ways to close the gap
- Hire someone for the office. The most personal option, and the most expensive. It covers business hours, not nights or weekends.
- Use a traditional answering service. A person answers around the clock, but the service often stops at taking a message, so someone still has to call back and schedule.
- Forward calls to your cell. Free, but you are still the one who has to pick up, on the roof or under the sink.
- Use an AI receptionist. It answers every call, day and night, in English or Spanish, asks the questions you choose, and books the job straight into your calendar.
What a good AI receptionist should do
If you look at the fourth option, ask any provider, us included, for these six things:
- Answer on the first ring, every time, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Know what counts as an emergency for you, and treat those calls differently.
- Book into your real calendar, not a separate one you have to check. AICall reads your availability from Google Calendar, Cal.com or GoHighLevel and writes the appointment back.
- Speak your customers' language. AICall works in English or Spanish: each business picks its language, and the agent speaks it end to end.
- Tell you what happened on every call, with a written summary you can read in a minute.
- Say "I don't know" when it doesn't. Ours takes a message and tells you. It never invents a price or promises a callback nobody scheduled.
A note on our own numbers
AICall is pre-launch, so this article does not quote customer results. Every number above comes from the sources listed below, and the example in the cost section is arithmetic, not a claim.
